Welcome To The Maldives Travel Guide

Assalaa mu alaikum! Welcome to our Maldives country guide! This guide mostly reflects our stay at Lux South Ari Atoll Resort as this is where we spent the majority of our time in the Maldives. We chose this resort because we loved their romantic overwater villas and this particular resort is located in an area where it is highly likely to see whale sharks on the reef during anytime of the year. This was especially important for us as we planned to be here in the off-season month of September and we really wanted to see marine life while visiting. Luckily for us, our stay at Lux was exactly what we were hoping for and more.

What can I expect from the Maldives?

In the Maldives (and specifically at Lux South Ari Atoll Resort) you can expect a luxurious stay right on the turquoise blue waters of the Indian ocean. You’ll find yourself receiving a warm welcome complete with waving employees, warm towels, and cold drinks as soon as your seaplane arrives at the dock. You’ll likely see an array of sea life including the elusive whale shark, manta rays, tropical fish, reef sharks, sting rays, dolphins, turtles, and flying fish to name a few. If you choose Lux South Ari Atoll as your resort you will also discover daily surprises including free coffee every morning, bottles with hidden surprises inside, free ice cream from an ice cream truck two times daily, free house snorkeling and some free water sports. You will likely spend a good majority of your days relaxing in the infinity pool outside of your villa, in the beehive hammock on the patio, or floating around in the ocean just below. Other options for daily activities include snorkeling on the house reef, scuba diving trips, yoga classes, creating art at the junk art studio, visiting the wish tree and leaving your wishes, and borrowing books from the on resort library to name a few.  For food options, you can expect to find breakfast buffets with many stations and options to satisfy any palate. Your dinners can also be buffets, some of which are themed, or you can choose a la carte options. Regardless of how you choose to spend your days, you can expect to be spoiled by luxury like you’ve never seen before!

Typical Costs When Traveling

In the Maldives we stayed at Lux South Ari Atoll. We booked through a third party site that gave a discount and included breakfast.

AccommodationWe stayed in the “Romantic” over the water villa with a private pool  6 Nights with breakfast included was $3,168.53 divided by two. We also stayed at Hotel Melrose in Male the first night for $80.

Food -All our breakfasts were buffets and included in our package. We ate lunch twice at the lagoon bar for about $25/person. Dinner was different every night and ranged from $175-$400 for two people. Every restaurant at the resort was amazing and different.

Transportation – We flew in and out of Male with our stopover in Hong Kong for $550 roundtrip. We then needed to take a seaplane from Male to our Resort about 25 minutes away Seaplane one way with speedboat and airplane transfer to male the other way, for two: $790 USD

Suggested daily budget – $300-$600 USD (Note: This is a suggested budget assuming you’re interested in booking excursions outside of just the free ones. This is money to cover tipping, drinks, souvenirs and the occasional afternoon cocktail)

Money Saving Tips

  1. Travel in the off-season!
  2. Keep an eye out for flight deals. We were traveling together so we chose to pay slightly more to choose seats next to one another, but you could save even more by not picking seats. Our flight from Hong Kong to the Maldives was pretty empty and a lot of people enjoyed extra room with empty seats next to them.
  3. Book Directly With the Resort. We received a 20% discount and included breakfast by doing this.
  4. Bring Your Own Snacks.
  5. Bring Your Own Pool Floaties.
  6. Order Al a Carte Meals. We ate a later lunch and an earlier dinner and skipped lunch most days.
  7. Take advantage of the resort’s freebies!
