Hong Kong

Welcome To The Hong Kong Travel Guide

Néih Hóu and welcome to our Hong Kong country guide! We want to preface this section by stating that we visited Hong Kong during the period of time that there were protests going on throughout the city. Many felt that we shouldn’t have gone during this time, but we felt completely safe and did not see a big disturbance in our trip from this. We did, however, elect different forms of transportation because of this and it was likely more expensive. Additionally, we talked to locals and watched the news for information about what areas to avoid. We were only in Hong Kong for four days, but felt that we were able to explore the city and the surrounding areas quite a bit. In this guide, you’ll find our experiences as well as our recommendations for the few days that we were able to stay here during a time of unrest.

What can I expect from Hong Kong?

Surprisingly, despite the active and ongoing protests throughout the city, we found Hong Kong to be a quiet city. There did not seem to be a lot of “hustle and bustle” and even though we spent time in traffic while in taxis, we rarely experienced “road rage” or even beeping of horns for that matter.  We were pleasantly surprised to discover diversity in Hong Kong with a nice Mixture of city life and outdoor activities such as hiking on the islands. You can also expect to find good eats at a reasonable price, including dim sum at Michelin five star restaurants, traditional Hong Kong breakfast sets, and surprisingly very different menus from american chains like Starbucks and Pizza Hut. We hope that you are able to explore our page and find valuable information for any upcoming trip you have planned to Hong Kong.

Typical Costs When Traveling

AccommodationWe rented the smallest studio apartment we’ve ever seen for 3 nights it was $260USD split between 2 people.

Food -We ate the majority of our meals at local restaurants breakfasts were around $3 USD and Dinners were about $10USD.

TransportationWe got lucky with our flights and only paid $550 Roundtrip from SFO. We flipped between Ubers and taxis depending on which was cheaper at the time but to island hop it’s about $25-$30 USD.

Suggested daily budget – $75-$100 USD (Note: This is a suggested budget assuming you’re staying in a Airbnb, eating out at local restaurants, and using a Uber or Taxi to get around. Using the budget tips below, you can always lower this number. However, if you stay in fancier accommodation or eat out more often, expect this to be higher!)

Money Saving Tips

  1. Check the prices of Uber and taxis. At times, one can be significantly cheaper than the other.
  2. Use Public Transportation.
  3. Watch for cheap flights.  We paid $550 for Roundtrip flights from San Francisco to Male, Maldives with a stop over in Hong Kong.
  4. Eat at local restaurants. Be brave, the signage might all be in another language but someone will help walk you through the menu!
  5. Negotiate! Don’t be afraid to negotiate prices if shopping in local markets
